Wilson Chu Biography

Wilson Chu (朱威锦) is a distinguished concert pianist, improviser, composer, and piano educator. Since 2019, he has served as the youngest Associate Professor of Piano at the College of Chinese & ASEAN Arts (CCAA), Chengdu University.

He received full scholarships throughout his formal training, completing his Diploma, Bachelor’s, and Master’s degrees at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (Singapore) and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He graduated with First-Class Honours and High Distinction at the Master’s level. His principal mentors include Aaron Shorr, Jonathan Plowright, Steven Osborne, and Roy Howat. In 2018, his dissertation project marked a historic milestone as he became the first composer-pianist to integrate Gamelan and piano in a concert in Scotland.

Wilson has earned numerous international accolades, including the Lamond Prize, Tony & Tania Webster Russian Prize, Elgar/Spedding Memorial Prize, NAFA Lucien Wang Award, and recognition from the Singapore International Piano Competition. He has performed with esteemed orchestras such as the RCS Symphony Orchestra and the Glasgow Chamber Orchestra. His performances have taken place at prominent venues worldwide, including the Esplanade (Singapore), Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, Aula Simfonia Jakarta, Wigmore Hall (London), Gothenburg Theatre, and Glasgow Stevenson Hall. His work has been featured in major media outlets, including The Straits Times, China-ASEAN Magazine, The Herald Scotland, and The Jakarta Post.

As a passionate educator, Wilson frequently gives masterclasses and serves as a jury member at international piano competitions, including events in Hanoi, Wiesbaden, Singapore, Melbourne, and various cities across Asia. He is regularly invited to speak at national arts education conferences throughout China and Southeast Asia.

In February 2023, he became the first Steinway Teacher & Educational Partner (STEP) in Indonesia, collaborating with Steinway Galleries across Asia. In June 2023, he was appointed Ambassador of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland to Asian countries. Since October 2024, he has also served as Artistic Director of the Musica Lumina International Piano Competition.

In May 2025, Wilson officially launched his piano studio in collaboration with Steinway Indonesia and Kakano Music Centre in Jakarta. The initiative was inspired by the exceptional achievements of his students, who have won major international competitions throughout Asia and Europe.
